WSC Delivered LEU Upgrade to the MIT Nuclear Reactor Laboratory MITR Simulator

The MIT Nuclear Reactor Laboratory (MIT-NRL) MIT Research Reactor (MITR) is a multi-purpose research reactor that is the second largest university reactor in the United States. In 2021, WSC delivered to MIT-NRL a replica MITR simulator model based on Highly Enriched Uranium Fuel (HEU).

 

Based on a transition planned for MITR, WSC provided an upgrade of the MITR simulator to encompass the use of Low Enriched Uranium (LEU) fuel. WSC created a second simulator load, based on the use of LEU fuel, and provided a second Host/Instructor Station and GlassTop Client, shown below.


The 3KEYMASTER and embedded RELAP5 models simulate all aspects of plant and reactor dynamics, logic and control systems, and Human Machine Interfaces (HMI).


The MITR simulator provides expanded training capabilities for reactor operators for license qualification/requalification, hands-on simulator training modules in MIT's undergraduate, graduate, and professional courses and outreach activities, and support to Research and Development activities.
